Runoko Rashidi, became a world traveler for over 30 years, traveling to over 125 countries, learning and chronicling the migration and existence of African people throughout the world.
As a lecturer and presenter, he has spoken in sixty-seven countries. He’s featured in well over 100 radio broadcasts and more than 50 television programs in addition to featuring in several newspaper and online articles.
This 75 minute Dr. Runoko Rashidi documentary looks at historical and cultural issues – some well-known, some “lost, stolen or strayed”– from an “African Centered" perspective. A perspective that interprets events, stories, personalities, imagery and artifacts from a point of view centered around the point of view of Africans, instead of their oppressors. It is a unique point of view which is sure to enlighten, inform, entertain and empower audiences for generations.
Rashidi’s aim was to influence the narrative about the continent while reuniting Africans, especially those in the diaspora. As a lecturer and presenter, he has spoken in sixty-seven countries. He’s featured in well over 100 radio broadcasts and more than 50 television programs in addition to featuring in several newspaper and online articles.
Rashidi has also made presentations at more than 110 colleges and universities across the world. Over the last decade, he has been busy telling the African story at churches, community centers, public and private schools, libraries and book stores.
Rashidi has lectured in England, France, Guyana, India, Japan, Namibia, the Netherlands, Russia, Thailand, Trinidad Australia, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Curacao, Egypt, Venezuela and Zimbabwe, to name a few places.
Dr. Rashidi has worked with and alongside some of the most distinguished scholars of the past half-century, including Ivan Van Sertima, John Henrik Clarke, Asa G. Hilliard, Edward Scobie, John G. Jackson, Jan Carew and Yosef ben-Jochannan.
Known as a very well-respected researcher who documented collections of African artifacts globally, Rashidi visited nearly every notable museum including the Turin Museum in Italy, the Egyptian Museum in Turin and the Gulbenkian Museum in Portugal.
Rashidi presents a truly different interpretation of much of the history most of us believe we already know.
He is also well known for his book Global Journeys in Search of the African Presence; it’s a travelogue chronicling his daily encounters with people of different countries and cultural practices that separate and unite Blacks around the word.
Runoko once said: “Black History is not something inherently exclusive to America. It spans the hidden corners and crevices of the world around us.” He spent most of his life proving that point up until the last day of his life. On August 2, 2021 Dr. Runoko Rashidi transitioned in Egypt to walk no more in the earthly relm but to walk among the ancestors knowing that when it came to his people, he fulfilled his purpose and his job was well done.
It is the contention that many of the “ills” facing Black America stems from the lack of knowledge about the true history concerning Americans of African descent. A history that began way “Before the Mayflower” and is inclusive of the great civilizations and cultures which populated the African continent, from Egypt in the east, to Songhai in the west to the Great Zimbabwe in the south.
